Salzburg 1798-M thaler Dav-1265
This specimen was lot 3229 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €160 (about US$207 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Konv.-Taler 1798. Mit Signatur M (Stempelschneider Franz Matzenkopf) unter dem Brustbild. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, convention thaler of 1798, with initial. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1789-1803 and is common. It was the last thaler issued by the archbishops. The issues of 1801-03 are catalogued as Dav-42. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
