Salzburg 1798-M ducat Fr-880
This specimen was lot 3210 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €480 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Dukat 1798. Mit Signatur M (Stempelschneider Franz Matzenkopf) unter dem Brustbild. GOLD. Kl. Kratzer, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, ducat of 1798, with signature M below the bust. Light scratches, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1787-1802 and is common. The prior issue (KM 437) had an oval shield on the reverse. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
