This specimen was lot 70124 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1762-FMK. Sigismund III. NGC AU-58. Exceptionally attractive for the type, this piece offers a high degree of deep toning along with some appealing underlying luster remaining. Only a hint of minor wear prevents a Mint State designation. Ex Rockaway Collection." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1762-64 and is slightly scarce.
