Salzburg 1761-MK ducat Fr-865
This specimen was lot 2331 in Goldberg sale 98 (Los Angeles, June 2017), where it sold for $1,058. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. Ducat, 1761. Sigmund III. Bust right. Reverse: Cardinal's hat above oval shield. Attractive original mint luster. NGC graded MS-62. WINGS." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1754-63 and is fairly common, tho priced about double the later issues of 1770's and 1780's.
