Salzburg 1753 ducat Fr-876
This specimen was lot 3122 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,750 (about US$2,261 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sigismund III. von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. Dukat 1753. GOLD. R Vorzüglich. Erworben im März 1985 von der Partin Bank, Bad Mergentheim. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund III of Schrattenbach, 1753-71, ducat of 1753. Rare, extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1753 only and is scarce. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
