Salzburg 1660 kreuzer KM-159
This specimen was part of lot 2887 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €180 (about US$233 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein, 1654-1668. 1 Kreuzer 1655, 1656, 1657, 1659, 1660, 1661, 1662, 1663, 1664, 1665, 1666, 1667, 1668. Probszt 1512-1514, 1516-1525; Zöttl 1834-1836, 1838-1847. 13 Stück., Meist sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Guidobald of Thun and Hohenstein, 1654-68, kreuzers of 1655-68. Thirteen pieces, mostly very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1654-68 and has a very low catalog value. Another variety, KM 185 (date at top), was struck 1660-63. In the mid seventeenth century, one thaler was 72 kreuzer. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
