Salzburg 1648 thaler Dav-3504
This specimen was lot 3236 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €200 (about US$283 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM, Paris von Lodron, 1619-1653. Reichstaler 1648. Sehr schön +. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris von Lodron, 1619-53, thaler of 1648. Very fine or better)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1623-53 and is common. Paris von Lodron successfully evaded involvement in the Thirty Years War save for subsidies sent to the emperor.
