Salzburg 1645 thaler Dav-3504
This specimen was lot 2123 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Paris Graf Lodron, 1619-1653. Taler 1643. Gutes vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris, count of Lodron, 1619-53, thaler of 1643. Good extremely fine, Extraordinary condition.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1623-53 and is one of the commonest thalers of the seventeenth century.
