Künker sale 384, lot 2811

This specimen was lot 2811 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,800 (about US$6,203 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Paris von Lodron, 1619-1653. Doppelter Reichstaler 1629. Von großer Seltenheit. Kl. Randfehler, teilweise schwach ausgeprägt, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 29, München 1989, Nr. 873. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris von Lodron, 1619-53, double thaler of 1629. Extremely rare, minor edge defects, weakly struck in spots, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (shown here) format in 1629 only and in klippe format (KM 92, Dav-3503) in 1624-25, 1629-32 and 1636. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57.45 g.
