Sincona sale 23, lot 3095

This specimen was lot 3095 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Paris Graf Lodron, 1619-1653 Taler 1624. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris, count of Lodron, 1619-53, thaler of 1624, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1623-53 and is one of the commonest thalers of the seventeenth century.
