This specimen was lot 2772 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €9,000 (about US$11,630 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Paris von Lodron, 1619-1653. 8 Dukaten 1620. Geschenkstück. Dreifeldiges, kombiniertes Stifts- und Familienwappen, darüber Kardinalshut mit herabhängenden Quasten//St. Rudbertus mit Mitra, Salzgefäß und Krummstab thront v. v. Variante mit dem Kopf des Heiligen auf der Rückseite nach vorn. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Rand und Felder bearbeitet, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris von Lodron, 1619-53, eight ducats of 1620, presentation strike. Obverse: threefold combined arms of the state and family, cardinal's hat with tassels above; reverse: St. Rudbert enthroned with miter, saltcellar and crozier. This variety with the saint's head facing left. Extremely rare, edge and fields tooled, very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in 1620 only. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
