Salzburg 1619 thaler Dav-A3492
This specimen was lot 2748 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,034 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. Reichstalerklippe 1619. RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 17 München 1983, Nr. 670. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, klippe thaler of 1619. Very rare, minor edge defect, very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (KM 38) and klippe format 1614-19. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
