Salzburg 1539 1/2 guldiner
This specimen was lot 1539 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$12,138 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Salzburg, Erzbistum. Matthäus Lang von Wellenberg, 1519-1540. 1/2 Guldiner 1539, Salzburg. +MATHEVS EPS. CARD. ARCHIEPS SALZBVR (TH in MATHEVS ligiert) Brustbild mit Birett nach links zwischen Stifts- und Familienwappen. Rv. AGNOSCE (Blatt) TE (Blatt) DILIGENTES (Blatt) Quadriertes Wappen unter Kardinalshut auf Kreuz und Krummstab. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. NGC AU55. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthew Lang of Wellenberg, 1519-40, half guldiner of 1539, Salzburg mint. Obverse: bust elft with beret between the arms of his family and the archbishopric; reverse: trefoil in legend, quartered arms below cardinal's hat and cross and crozier. Extremely rare, Extremely fine, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"
When the thaler first appeared in the early sixteenth century, it was equal to the goldgulden and had the alternate name of guldiner. By the end of the century, the guldiner had become the gulden and slipped to five-sixths of a thaler.
