Salzburg 1539 guldiner Dav-8165
This specimen was lot 2549 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$12,922 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, 1519-1540. Guldiner 1539. Brustbild l. in geistlichem Ornat mit Birett, darunter die Jahreszahl MDXXXIX, in der Umschrift das Familienwappen und das Stiftswappen//Vierfeldiges Stifts- und Familienwappen, darüber Kardinalshut mit herabhängenden Quasten, dahinter Kreuz- und Krummstab gekreuzt. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang of Wellenburg, 1519-40, guldiner of 1539. Obverse: robed bust left in biret, date below, family and state arms in the legend; reverse: quartered arms of the state and family under a cardinal's hat with tassels, cross and crozier behind. Extremely rare, attractive example with nice toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Davenport lists this type for 1539 only. Another guldiner struck in 1534-39 (Dav-8162) has St. Rupert on the reverse.
