Künker sale 384, part of lot 2558

This specimen was part of lot 2558 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €220 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, 1519-1540. 2 Kreuzer (1/2 Batzen) 1526, 1527, 1531, 1532, 1533. Probszt 266, 267, 269, 270, 271; Zöttl Type 1 = 276, 277, 280, 281, 282. 5 Stück., Meist sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang of Wellenburg, 1519-40, two kreuzer or half batzen of 1526-33, five pieces, mostly very fine.)"

The two kreuzer or half batzen was a familiar denomiation in Switzerland. Other parts of Germany preferred the three kreuzer or groschen. Wikipedia comments,

"In the course of the Protestant Reformation Lang's adherence to the older faith, together with his pride and arrogance, made him very unpopular in his Salzburg diocese. As early as in 1523 he was involved in a serious struggle with his subjects in the City of Salzburg, and in 1525, during the German Peasants' War, he had again to fight hard to hold his own. Insurgents occupied the town of Hallein, devastated the archbishop's Burg Hohenwerfen and even laid siege to his residence at Hohensalzburg, until they were finally defeated with the aid of troops provided by the Swabian League."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Probszt 269; Zöttl 280 (Type 1).
