S'Heerenberg (1546-77) daalder Dav-8577
This specimen was lot 1149 in Jean Elsen sale 122 (Brussels, September 2014), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,838 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, BERGH, Graafschap, Willem IV (1546-1586), AR daalder, z.j. Droit: Geharnast bb. l. met pelsmantel. Mmt. granaatappel. Revers: Gehelmd wapenschild. Zeldzaam. Gereinigd. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, county of Bergh, William IV (1546-86), silver daalder without date. Obverse: armored and mantled bust, pomegranate mintmark; reverse: helmeted arms. Rare, mounted, very fine.)"
The count of Bergh (or s'Heerenberg) issued daalders and other silver coins in the fifteenth century before being absorbed into Gelderland, in which province the town still remains. We have filed this coin under Gelderland as the coinage of Bergh is too scanty to warrant its own page.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29.03 g, 0.826 fine silver, this specimen 28,57 g.
