Culemborg (1540-98) daalder Dav-8889
This specimen was lot 3541 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $. The catalog description[1] noted, "GELDERLAND: Barony, AR daalder, ND (1540-1598), half-length bust right with SANCTUS CAROLVS MANGNVS (spelling variant) around // rampant lion left with MONETA NOVA ARGENTEA D I P around, somewhat weakly struck, graffiti "star" in obverse field, attribution tentative., Fine, RR. Culemborg was a free city in the center of the Netherlands. People used to come to Culemborg to evade their creditors, as the creditors were not allowed into the city. The phrase "Going to Culemborg" became synonymous with going bankrupt." Davenport says this type is "doubtfully attributed" to Culemborg. The town is in the SW part of Gelderland, about 15 km south of Utrecht.
