Culemborg 1590 oord
This specimen was lot 2507 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €160 (about US$203 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, CULEMBORG, Floris van Palland, Cu oord (vier penningen), 1590, Gorinchem. Vz/ Gekroond wapenschild. Kz/ LIBER/TAS VI/TA CA/RIOR in een versierde cartouche. Daarboven waarde P- IIII. Zeldzaam. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, county of Culemborg, Florian of Palland, 1555-98, copper oord (four pence) of 1590, Gorinchem mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: motto in square tablet, value above. Rare, fine to very fine.)"
The oord was equal to the liard and eighty liards made a gulden. The 1590 seems to be the only date. The town is in the SW part of Gelderland, about 15 km south of Utrecht. The reverse motto, Libertas Vita Carior, translates as "Freedom is dearer than Life".
