S'Heerenberg (1546-77) daalder Dav-8579
This specimen was lot 1150 in Jean Elsen sale 122 (Brussels, September 2014), where it sold for €650 (about US$995 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, BERGH, Graafschap, Willem IV (1546-1586), AR daalder van 24 stuiver, z.j. Droit: Geharnast bb. l. met de linkerhand aan het gevest van zijn zwaard. Revers: Gehelmd wapenschild, met waardeaanduiding 24-SF tussen helm en wapen. Zeer Zeldzaam. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, county of Bergh, William IV (1546-86), silver daalder without date. Obverse: armored bust with left hand on sword; reverse: helmeted arms divide value. Very rare, fine to very fine.)"
The count of Bergh (or s'Heerenberg) issued daalders and other silver coins in the fifteenth century before being absorbed into Gelderland, in which province the town still remains. We have filed this coin under Gelderland as the coinage of Bergh is too scanty to warrant its own page.
