Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75454

This specimen was lot 75454 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 50th Anniversary Gold 50 Rubles, 1999-(M). Moscow Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations with the PRC. An attractive Proof with mirrored fields and frosted devices." We don't know what prompted the issue of this NCLT unless the regime was trying to flatter the PRC into an advantageous trade deal. Other fifty rubles for 1999 include KM Y692 (Pushkin), Y698 (ballet) and Y702 (Przhevalsky).

Recorded mintage: 1,000 proofs.

Specification: 8.75 g, 0.900 fine gold, 22.6 mm diameter, 0.2532 troy oz AGW.
