Stack's Bowers 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73084

This specimen was lot 73084 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Kopeks, 1822-CNB NA. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander I. NGC MS-63. Narrow crown variety. Exceptionally radiant and shimmering, this choice minor offers a dazzling amount of alluring iridescent toning as well." This type is listed for 1810-26 and has a low catalog value in circulated condition. This date is common and an 1822/1 overdate is noted. Assayer's initials PD stand for Paul Danilov. Silver five kopeks (KM C96.1, C126, C156, C163, Y19) alternated with copper five kopeks (KM C115, C140, C152, Y6, Y12) until 1880, when the issue of copper five kopeks ceased.
