Russia 1737 ruble Dav-1674
The first specimen was lot 21777 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Anna Rouble 1737, Hedlinger type, Bust right/Crowned Imperial eagle with date, VF. Slightly mottled, gray patina, with a few minor contact marks. A very scarce variety of the Anna Rouble." The second specimen was lot 20475 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[2] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1737. Red (Moscow) Mint. Anna. NGC AU-55. Variety with 5 pearls in coiffure, jeweled cross on bust. Light grey toning with light golden highlights. Some luster remains amongst the protected areas of the legend." Two types are noted for 1737; the other (Dav-1673) has a smaller bust of the empress and the date to the left of the eagle. Both are scarce. Collecting Russian coins is made more confusing by the plethora of competing catalog numbering systems.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 25.85 g, .802 fine silver, 0.666 troy oz ASW.
