This specimen was lot 4541 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $310.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia. Ruble, 1729. Peter II, 1727-1730. NGC graded Fine, Details (Mount Removed)." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. Many ruble types were issued only briefly and can be dated even if they don't bear dates. This type is rare but this damaged specimen sold fairly cheaply. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but shrank to 20 grams by the end of the reign of Catherine the Great.
