500 Lei 1946

A crudely struck aluminum coin from the newly installed communist regime (1945–1989). In 1947 King Michael was forced to abdicate and fled to exile. The country was under the occupation of Soviet troops, and forced to pay a huge war debt to the USSR. The Decree no. 1814 from June 11th 1946, published in the Official Gazette no. 137 from June 17th 1946, settled the issuing of metallic coins of 500 and 1000 lei made of aluminum. This type is rather scarce in nice condition.
