Romania 1914 2 lei
This specimen was lot 71443 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. 2 Lei, 1914. PCGS MS-66 Secure Holder. Tied for finest certified at PCGS. A lovely gem to match the one leu we are offering in this sale. A real beauty, sharply struck with frosty luster." This type was struck for the kingdom of Romania in 1910-14. The weight and fineness matches that of a French two francs and Italian two lire. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1914, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the two lei resumed in 1924, it was a copper-nickel coin.
