This specimen was lot 71444 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. Leu, 1914. PCGS MS-67 Secure Holder. Tied for finest certified at PCGS. Superb quality, frosty with light tone and great eye appeal." This type was struck for the kingdom of Romania in 1910-14. The weight and fineness matches that of a French franc and Italian lira. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1914, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. It was accompanied by a two lei (KM 43). When mintage of the leu resumed in 1924, it was a copper-nickel coin.

Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .134 troy oz ASW, 23 mm diameter.
