The region now called the United Arab Emirates, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. Dubai joined the UAE while Qatar chose to become independent. The economy is entirely dependent on oil. This type was struck 1973 and 1978 and both dates are common.
