The region now called the United Arab Emirates, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. Dubai joined the UAE while Qatar chose to become independent. The economy is entirely dependent on oil. This type was struck 1972-73 and both dates are common.
