This specimen was issued by the Qatar and Dubai while they were still loosely federated in the 1960's. The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. Dubai joined the UAE while Qatar chose to become independent. The economy is entirely dependent on oil. This type, featuring a gazelle, was struck at the British Royal Mint in 1966 and 1971.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.
Specification: bronze, 7.5 g, 27 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 3 (listed under Qatar & Dubai).
