Sincona sale 73, lot 1126

This specimen was lot 1126 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Brandenburg / Prussia. Friedrich II. 1740-1786. Taler 1784 E, Königsberg. NGC MS61. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II, 1740-86, thaler of 1784, Königsberg mint. Extraordinary condition, graded NGC MS61.)"

This type was struck 1775-86 at Berlin, Breslau and Königsberg (shown here). It is common in circulated condition, tho Königsberg issues obtain a slight premium. Frederick the Great emerged victorious from the Seven Years War but it was a very near thing, with only the death of the empress Elizabeth in 1761 saving Prussia from utter destruction. Having established Prussia as a major power, he eschewed further wars of aggression.
