Portuguese India 1952 rupia
This specimen is a one year type struck in Lisbon for the Portuguese colonies in India. Once extensive, Portuguese dominions had dwindled by the 1800's to the enclaves of Goa, Diu and Damao. Issues up to 1952 were based on the rupee (one rupia = 16 tanga) and struck at the British controlled mints of Bombay and Calcutta. The last issues (1958-61) were based on the escudo. This specimen was lot 42422 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $105.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Rupia, 1952. NGC MS-65. A gem example of the issue with no splotches or other problems. Transparent pink and blue tone enhances the visual appeal of the piece."
