Stack's Bowers November 2015 sale, lot 42420
Port India SB1115-42420r.jpg

This specimen is from a two year type struck in Lisbon for the Portuguese colonies in India. Once extensive, Portuguese dominions had dwindled by the 1800's to the enclaves of Goa, Diu and Damao. Issues up to 1952 were based on the rupee (one rupia = 16 tanga) and struck at the British controlled mints of Bombay and Calcutta. The last issues (1958-61) were based on the escudo. This specimen was lot 42420 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India (Goa). 1/4 Rupia, 1952. NGC MS-65. Prova. Attractive clear rose and blue coloration across immaculate copper-nickel lustrous surfaces. An always popular and sought-after issue."

Recorded mintage: 4,000,000.

Specification: 2.8 g, copper-nickel, plain edge, 19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-Pr10; Gomes-06.02 (regular issue) or Gomes-R.E4.01 (prova).
