Stack's Bowers May 2025 Collectors Choice Online Auction, lot 75250

This specimen was lot 75250 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. 1/4 Tanga, 1903. Lisbon Mint. Carlos I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details." This specimen is from a two year type struck for the Portuguese colonies in India. Once extensive, Portuguese dominions had dwindled by the 1800's to the enclaves of Goa, Diu and Damao. Issues up to 1952 were based on the rupee (one rupia = 16 tanga) and struck at the British controlled mints of Bombay and Calcutta. This type was also struck in 1901.

Recorded mintage: 800,000 for 1901 and 1903.

Specifications: 6.4 g, bronze, 25.5 mm diameter.
