This NCLT was minted and sold in 1982-83 and circulated throughout Portugal and the Azores, although the SCWC catalogs it under Madeira. It was sold in sets with the similar 25 escudos. Wikipedia notes, "João Gonçalves Zarco (c. 1390-1471) was a Portuguese explorer who established settlements and recognition of the Madeira Islands, and was appointed first captain of Funchal by Henry the Navigator."

Recorded mintage: 270,000 in copper-nickel plus 20,000 proofs in silver.
