In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is from a type struck for Portugal 1942-69, after which the denomination was shrunk to 16 mm diameter (KM 595). The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 8,657,000 plus 10,891,000 of KM 595.

Specification: 3.2 g, bronze, 21 mm diameter.
