In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is from a type struck for Portugal 1971-74, replacing a silver issue of 1954-55. The following type (KM 633) was nickel brass and was struck 1986-2000. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.
Recorded mintage: 3,876,000.
