In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is from a commemorative issued to honor the opening of the Salazar bridge over the Tagus river which divides Lisbon. Dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar died in 1968 and the Estado Novo collapsed in 1974 in the Carnation Revolution, whereupon the bridge was renamed the 25 de Abril bridge.
