In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is from a commemorative set of five, ten and twenty escudos issued on the 400th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator. Tho this prince did not participate in any voyages of exploration, he funded and directed them and collected the resulting knowledge. Portugal, then under the dictatorship of Antonio Salazar, issued commemoratives to honor those safely dead.
