In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown commemorates the battle of Ourique in 1139. It was struck to the standard of the old fifty centavos of 1912-16 (KM 561). This denomination reappeared as a regular issue (KM 582) for 1932-42 and 1948. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.
