This specimen was lot 4270 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1927. NGC MS-66. Tied with just two others in this grade, with only one higher." In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a better date, despite the large mintage, of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded an aluminum-bronze type struck 1924-26 (KM 576) and in turn was replaced by a bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 1,917,000.

Specification: 7.5 g, copper-nickel, 26.7 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-578, Gomes-25.01.
