In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. This type was struck 1917 and 1919 and is the only issue of this denomination. No two centavos were struck after 1921 and the five centavos was retired in 1927. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 10,067,000.
