This specimen was lot 43299 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1916. Lisbon Mint. NGC MS-63." In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. This type was struck 1915-16 only; the next issue of 1924-26 was in aluminum bronze. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Specification: 25 g, 0.835 fine silver, 37 mm diameter.
