Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 43293

This specimen was lot 43293 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 500 Reis, 1910. Lisbon Mint. Manuel II. PCGS MS-63." Manuel II became kingo foPortugal in 1908 at the age of 19 on the assassination of his father and older brother. He could not calm the ensuing political turmoil and he was ousted in a coup in 1910. In the last year of his reign, the regime issued two commemorative 500 réis, this one honoring the centennial of the Peninsular War and KM 557, honoring the marquis of Pombal. Both are slightly scarce.

Recorded mintage: 200,000 of KM 556 (shown here) plus 400,000 of KM 557.

Specification: 12.50 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30 mm diameter.
