This type was struck in Lisbon 1900 only. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. This fifty réis piece is the only copper-nickel issue of this denomination; previous issues (1855-93) were silver. Fortunately for collectors, it is common.
Recorded mintage: 8,000,000.
Specification: 2.5 g, copper-nickel, 18 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM 545, Gomes-05.01.
