King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. This type was struck 1900 only along with a fifty réis (KM 545). It superseded a dime-sized coin struck in silver (KM 531).
Recorded Mintage: 16,000,000.
