Sincona sale 18, lot 3047

This specimen was lot 3047 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"5000 Reis 1860. Lissabon Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, five thousand réis of 1860, Lisbon mint, extremely fine.)"

This type appeared after the conversion to decimal coinage in 1836. It was struck 1860-61 but is seldom seen compared to later issues that featured Luis I.

Recorded mintage: 52,000.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, this specimen: 8.87 grams.
