The first specimen was lot 30844 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $158.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 40 Reis, 1833. NGC AU-50 BN. Miguel I." The pataco or forty réis was struck both by Miguel I (shown here) and Maria II (KM 402) in 1833. In 1836, the coinage was reformed and made decimal.
