Portugal struck an extensive series of copper coins in the eighteenth century which saw long and hard circulation. As a result, they are very scarce in choice condition. This type was issued 1751-76 with mintages in the millions. For 1757, the IOSEPHUS obverse is more common. Ten réis was half a vintén.
Recorded mintage: 1,114,000 (KM 243.1 and KM 243.2).
Specification: 12.70 g, copper, 35.5 mm diamerter.
Catalog reference: KM 243.1 (with the king's name as IOSEPHUS, shown here) and KM 243.2 (with the king's name as JOSEPHUS).
