Portugal 1704 400 reis rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen was lot 75526 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1704. Lisbon Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Deep charcoal toning and just minimal wear. Also known as a Cruzado. Quite scarce in higher grades." This type was struck 1696-97, 1704-06 and is rather scarce, especially the first two dates. As it was the largest silver denomination issued by Portugal in the eighteenth century, it is listed in Davenport tho it is much too small to be called a thaler or crown.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 17.3 g, 0.917 fine silver, 35 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-1627, KM-154.3.
