This specimen was lot 3564 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $154.70. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL: Felipe III, 1621-1640, AR 100 reis (tostão), Lisbon, ND, crowned arms // cross of Jerusalem with quincunx in each quarter, obverse slightly double-struck, surface hairlines, NGC graded EF Details." In 1578, king Sebastian of Portugal was killed fighting the Moors in Africa. After some confusion, in 1580, Philip II moved in and annexed the country, which was held as part of the Spanish crown until 1640. This example realized one-seventh of its catalog value.
